Challenge: Victor® Equipment Company,
a division of Thermadyne®, and the
market leader in gas apparatus and
pressure controls manufacturing, had
been conducting in-person training for 35
years. In the global economy, Victor
realized that not all their distributors and
customers would come to Denton, Texas,
for training. How could Victor get as
much training as possible to diverse
users — where they live and work? How
could the Victor training department distill
35 years’ worth of training materials into
one CD?
Value-added approach: Since the
Jenobi team consisted of instructional
system designers (ISD), training
developers, as well as graphic design,
video and multimedia specialists, Jenobi was able to assist the Victor training
department personnel to quickly create
the project parameters and identify what
information was absolutely necessary for
users to know.
By starting with what was essential,
Jenobi developed the framework for the
entire CD training program. This
seamless, performance-based approach
resulted in an 18-module CD that used
practical illustrations (animation, video,
still photography, charts), to fully engage
the learner with sight and sound.
Combined with task-applicable
descriptions, lessons that presented
measurable performance objectives, as
well as feedback exercises to reinforce
learning and end-of-segment testing, the
CD was designed to provide a
benchmark for the welding industry.
Quite early in the planning portion of the
project, Jenobi proposed that the
training CD be

augmented to serve as a complete, interactive reference source
with supplemental information to confirm
the credibility of Victor as the premiere
provider in this marketplace. Jenobi recommended including the industry’s
first interactive glossary of terms and,
from the standpoints of safety and
quality, for users to be able to select the
proper tip, torch and regulator for the
intended application.
To these ends, Jenobi proposed creating a dictionary
and interactive source book, based on
the Victor products catalog, to add value
to the training CD. Jenobi also created
attention getting animations from the
CAD drawings Victor already had.
The
use of these drawings provided
substantial cost savings and reduced the
time frame for production of the CD. In
addition, Jenobi programmed the
training material so that web-based
versions would be available after
the CD release.
Results: The Gas Apparatus Training CD
is now the industry’s most
comprehensive electronic resource for
teaching end users, welding students
and Victor distributors to choose proper
equipment and work with safe operating
techniques. Module subjects range from
physics and the properties of gases to
detailed information on the operation of
torches, regulators and cutting
attachments.
To recoup their
development costs, Victor sells the
training CD. Technical schools are offered
a substantial discount on the CD
program — part of Victor’s continuing
effort to help students get a safe start in
their careers. |
